‘These early friendships are huge romances’: Extra Geography’s lessons in teenage love

Rose Tremain, together with the actors and crew of a new film that shifts her 1950s narrative to the early 2000s, recall the depth of these connections and explain why the story remains timeless.

A few years back, Rose Tremain was asked to identify her greatest letdown. Her response? The movie version of her novel Restoration. Despite having a Hollywood-scale budget, featuring Robert Downey Jr and Ian McKellen, and earning a couple of Academy Awards, it was “a mess.” Speaking from her home in Norfolk, Tremain is far more positive about a fresh British adaptation of her semi-autobiographical short story Extra Geography, which is set in a 1950s boarding school and was originally released in 2007.

“I’ve been thrilled with this entire endeavor,” she says, still appearing astonished. Tremain is fond of the screenplay, adapted from her elegant five-page narrative by playwright and Succession scriptwriter Miriam Battye. At their initial meeting, Battye assured her it would smoothly transition to contemporary times: “I felt genuinely pleased about that,” Tremain remarks. “It’s not merely a minor artifact from my history. It holds contemporary importance.” For more details, visit 亚博网址.
